5/13/2023 0 Comments Pamuk orhan istanbul![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pamuk is a faithful practitioner of what is termed the “East-West novel” genre in Turkish literature, which addresses fraught encounters of modernity between Ottoman or Turkish Muslim and European cultures. He published his first novel, Cevdet Bey and Sons (1982 Turkish 2023 English), a three-generation saga ranging from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic, when he was thirty. Pamuk devoted himself to painting until the age of twenty-two before he decided to become a novelist. After graduating high school (the American Robert College, Istanbul), he studied architecture before receiving a degree in journalism from Istanbul University. Most of his work is set in Istanbul, Turkey, the former capital of the Ottoman Empire, and the city of his birth (1952). Orhan Pamuk, one of the foremost practitioners of the global novel today, writes with a focus on Turkish culture, history, and politics while engaging techniques of world literature. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Tracy k smith poems life on mars![]() ![]() Her adaptation of the category expands the frame of reference for the purposes of an existential inquiry into the nature of humanity and transcendence. Smith employs the cosmic sublime not only as a spatial mode of perception but also as a metaphor of the emotional response to death. The primary intention of my study is to examine the strategies and implications of the poet’s revisionary engagement with the aesthetics, rhetoric, popular mythology and mysticism of the spatial infinite. Written after the death of her father, who was one of the engineers of the Hubble telescope, the volume links personal elegy and the work of mourning with philosophical questions about the relationship between the self and scientifically framed visions of the cosmos. Smith uses tropes of cosmic perspective, scientific gaze and interplanetary travel to problematize the relationship between human finitude and the boundless unknown of the universe. ![]() ![]() ![]() In her book of poetry Life on Mars (2011), Tracy K. The cosmic sublime, as the most spectacular manifestation of the natural sublime, offers rich stimuli for the literary imagination, as well as for various interactions between science, culture and art. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Handbook for mortals author![]() ![]() ![]() Her fate is left in the hands of a mortal who does not believe in a world of real magick, a fortuneteller who knew one day Zade would put herself in danger and a dagger with mystical powers. Most importantly, contributors to this volume write as teachers as well as researchers. The latter aspect is especially helpful since it focuses on approaches that are still seldom covered in most textbooks on biblical criticism, like reading from a spatial and a visual perspective. This book will help readers learn not only about Paul in particular but also how one might approach the New Testament in general. "This is arguably the best and most accessible textbook for a course on reading Paul. I feel I've been waiting for it for a very long time." "Pauline studies, long the most methodologically monolithic and theologically timid area of New Testament studies, bursts out of its shell with this textbook. So was it outdated? In an era where some are throwing elaborate gender reveal parties and others are embracing they/them pronouns, Davis set out to answer that question, and to find out where tomboys fit into our changing understandings of gender. But "tomboy" seemed like an outdated word-why use a word with "boy" in it for such girls at all? Her child favored sweatpants and T-shirts over anything pink or princess-themed, just like the sporty, skinned-kneed girls Davis had played with as a kid. So when author and journalist Lisa Selin Davis's six-year-old daughter first called herself a "tomboy," Davis was hesitant. ![]() We are in the middle of a cultural revolution, where the spectrum of gender and sexual identities is seemingly unlimited.
